Canyons Resort Gets Great Review in the New York Times

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011 by admin

Ryan Brandt
I’m always on the look-out for some positive press on Utah. This past weekend the New York Times reviewed the Canyons Resort in Park City and gave it a wonderful review. Most of you who grew up here remember it as Park West. We used to ski there because it wasn’t as crowded or expensive as Park City. We’ve seen it change hands a couple of times and go through some growing pains.

But if you haven’t been there in the past couple of years, you are missing out. Check out this article and see the what the press is saying about us.

Fall Meeting Wrap-Up

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 by admin

Thanks to everyone who helped plan and execute the Fall Utah Alliance Meeting in Box Elder County. For those of you who couldn’t attend, you missed a great meeting. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge Center is absolutely fabulous.
Bird Refuge Center
This picture doesn’t do it justice. The resources that are available in the center are really great. You need to take your family there to visit the center and then drive on the Wildlife grounds to see the birds. Call before you come so you can plan a time where you will see more birds - obviously in the spring and fall when they are flying through. However, they say that December is a great time to view the Bald Eagle.

Not only did you miss out on the great scenic and eco-tourism aspect of the meeting, you missed out on some pretty fabulous presentations. Mayor Fife welcomed us and gave us a brief overview of what’s been going on up here. Natalie Gochnor gave a great presentation on the current state of the Utah economy. And there was a great panel discussion on the siting of Procter & Gamble’s facility here.

For copies of our meeting presentations, go to our meeting resources section here. Some of the presentations didn’t load due to their size. I’ll be trying to correct that and get the rest of presentations online this week.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 10, 2012 for the next Alliance Meeting. We will be meeting in St. George - again the day before the What’s Up Down South meeting. See you then!

Cultural Arts District in Charlotte

Friday, September 30th, 2011 by admin

I had the opportunity to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina for the IEDC conference last week. One of the tour options was to take a walking tour of their downtown cultural arts district. Because we are facing a similiar issue in Salt Lake City, (see latest article in Deseret News) I decided to sign up and see what Charlotte had done.

Charlotte’s downtown is fairly compact, much like Salt Lake. Within a fairly short distance, you have access to the 5 or so museums, theaters and the Bank of America football stadium where the Panthers were creamed by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, as well as their basketball arena. I was surprised at how close all these venues were. In fact, when I got up on Sunday morning, all the parking lots in the vacinity of the hotel were hosts to Panther tailgating parties.

And much like Salt Lake, during the work day there over 85,000 workers who commute downtown to work. Remember Charlotte is one of the banking capitals with Bank of America and Wachovia (Wells Fargo) having major headquarters there. City officials wanted their downtown to be liveable and memorable. They also wanted to bring tourists in and have a place where they spend some time (and money). They added downtown housing and the building featured below is a high-end condo complex where the likes of Michael Jordan live.

They undertook this project to restore and build new art galleries, museums and a performing arts center. The massive undertaking was funded by private donations, grants and tax increment financing.

Below is the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The cool statue in front is called “The Firebird” and the same artist also did some of the other artwork found in the park, across the street from the museum and adjacent to the condos.

A couple of other art pieces in the park include this cool skull.

I loved this piece of art totally made from brick.

The Blumenthal Center for the Performing Arts is a fabulous 2100 seat modern theater perfect for traveling broadway shows, as well as symphonies, ballet and the like. The theater is rather unassuming as it part of the high rise business buildings in the downtown. I would have walked right past it if I didn’t know it was there.

One thing downtown Charlotte didn’t have, however, was a place to shop. No mall, no free standing department stores. No where to spend a few dollars. I complained to my husband on my return home that there wasn’t anyplace to shop. He didn’t even try to pretend that he felt sorry for me.

Another Great Ski Season in Utah

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 by admin

Snowbird 4th of July skiing
I know it’s hard to believe, but while most of us were celebratin the 4th of July hitting Utah’s lakes, canyons and campgrounds, there were a number of skiiers at Snowbird taking in the last “official” day of the 2010-2011 ski season.

In fact, this ski season was Utah’s 2nd busiest ever. Ski Utah reports that the state’s 14 resorts attracted 4.22 million skier-day visits during this ski season. The Utah ski industry generated $1.17 billion in economic activity this season, exceeding the previous record of $1.06 billion in 2007-08.

What is a skier-day? The National Ski Association defines it as one person visiting a ski area for all or any part of a day or night for the purpose of skiing or snowboarding.

And even though the ski season officially ended on Monday, don’t pack your skis too far away. The 2011-2012 ski season is just four months away. Get on the stick - the first 50 season ski passes for Snowbird have already been sold. See you then!

Nothing to do this holiday weekend? Go Skiing!

Snowbird Skiing
While Memorial Day weekend typically kicks off the summer season, this year may be a different story. Utah weather for the weekend will be marginal at best. Predictions of clouds, rain and cooler temperatures does make for an ideal camping weekend.

Don’t despair! Grab your skiis and head up to the mountains for a great day of skiing. You may even get some fresh powder while the rest of the valley gets rain. Snowbird has plans to stay open through the 4th of July.

And if you’re not a skiier and are stuck in your house, grab your art supplies and join Snowbird’s Design a T-shirt contest. Snowbird is holding a contest to design a T-shirt commemorating their plans to stay open until July 4th. The winning design will be printed on 1,000 shirts that will be sold there on the Fourth of July weekend. The best part is that the winner will get a spring season pass good next year. Entries are due June 17th. Go to the Snowbird webpage for more details.

Whatever you plan to do this weekend, do it safely!

Good Food Coming to an Airport Near You

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 by admin

The Salt Lake International Airport will be going through another remodel of their terminals. The bad news is that it’s a mess, confusing and inconvenient. The good news is that they will be adding new places to eat and shop. Now mind you, I don’t go out of my way to eat or shop at the airport, but when you do get stuck there because of delays, it would be nice to have some decent food choices.

Market Street Grill Tarts
Next time you are sitting at the airport hungry, imagine having the opportunity to eat at places such as: Market Street Grill, Mill Creek Coffee, Cafe Rio, High West Distillery & Saloon, Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta, Veloce Cucina Toscana and Greek Souvlaki.

Who knows? Maybe the remodel will be worth it after all.

Two Festivals Scheduled in Salt Lake

There are two fun events scheduled in Salt Lake City this weekend that would be worth your while to attend. The first event is the Urban Arts Festival scheduled for Saturday, May 21 at Pierpont Avenue between 300 & 400 South. At the festival you will experience downtown SLC’s urban, artistic culture in a one day event benefiting YouthCity and Skate 4 Homies foundations. For more information on this event, visit their website.

The second event, also scheduled for this weekend is the annual Living Traditions Festival. This is a great event that celebrates the diversity of our ethnic community through the arts.

In addition to dozens of performances, crafts demonstrations, games and activities, the festival presents special guest artists from around the world. The Living Traditions Food Market offers an array of traditionally prepared foods by twenty local ethnic groups.

This event is scheduled for three days at the City and County Building located at 200 E. 450 South. You can visit the festival on May 20 (5-10 pm), May 21 ( noon-10 pm), or May 22 (noon-7 pm). The best part of this event is that it is FREE! It is a great way to support Utah’s diversity.

For more information on this event, go to their website.

Tastemakers Salt Lake for a Good Cause

Thursday, May 5th, 2011 by admin

Last month I mentioned that during the year Salt Lake City restaurants get together for a “Dine Around” - giving diners a great deal on a lunch or dinner in hopes that they will come back. I just found out about another event called “Tastemakers Salt Lake.” Tastemakers Salt Lake is a two-day strolling food event, featuring restaurants from the Wasatch Front and Back.

Participants will sample tastes from eateries in the pavilion, as well as walk to other nearby establishments for small bites.

For $20 ($10 extra for wine and beer pairings), attendees will receive a passport for the event, stamped at each restaurant, and are valid for both nights. Instructions and a stroll area map will be included in the passport.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Utah Food Bank and Utah Head Start.

When: May 19-20, 5-10 pm
Location: 147 W. 300 South and various locations in downtown SLC
Tickets and more information can be found here
