Say HELLO to one of our long-time Corporate Sponsors: Layton Construction. Layton has pretty much sponsored the Utah Alliance since our inception and we appreciate all their support over the years. In case you don't know anything about this wonderful, Utah-based company, Layton is a nationally-ranked commercial contractor with projects throughout the United States and within many industry and market segments. Layton has office locations in Phoenix, Ariz.; Irvine, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii; Boise, Idaho; Nashville, Tenn.; and Salt Lake City, Utah. Layton is currently ranked No. 64 on Engineering News-Record’s 2011 list of the Top 400 Contractors in the United States.
Layton has been in Utah for 58 years - they were founded in 1953.
Layton Construction has long been an agent in Utah's economic growth. Working with private and public sectors, Layton Construction team members serve on many boards and contribute to community activities which enhance Utah’s economic vitality and quality of life, including Utah Alliance for Economic Developers, EDCUtah, Utah Sports Commission, Visit Salt Lake, NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association, University of Utah, Associated General Contractors, American Institute of Architects, U.S. Green Building Council®, Design-Build Institute of America, Building Owners and Managers Association, and a wide variety of other community arts, service and charitable organizations.
Layton's biggest win was the contract to build a number of offices for City Finance in Utah and Idaho in the mid-1950s. This project created a stable base of work and propelled Layton to become the company it is today. Of course, every project is the “biggest win” as we work with that customer to exceed their expectations by providing a positive construction experience with predictable outcomes.
The take on how they can help local economic developers do their job better: Communicate to understand and facilitate land use, explore architectural and engineering ideas and constraints and develop facilities plans that will enhance the local community’s economic growth and quality of life.
Layton Construction is proud of its Utah heritage and has built something that has influenced every Utahn. Layton has built sports facilities to entertain, hospitals to heal, religious edifices in which to worship, jails in which to promote public safety, television and radio stations to entertain and inform, office and manufacturing buildings in which to conduct commerce, and utility plants to heat, cool and provide power. Literally, at the flip of a light switch, Layton’s work illuminates every Utahn.
Current Projects:
USTAR
The 203,000-square-foot USTAR facility at the University of Utah will contain laboratory space, core facilities, faculty office space, symposium and conference space and public areas designed to encourage maximum interaction of faculty from diverse disciplines. The building’s biomedical nanofabrication unit will be one of the most sophisticated in the world and will help U of U researchers solve problems at the interface of medical science and engineering. The facility is seeking a LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council® and is expected to be complete in December 2011.

University of Utah Specialty Care Center at Daybreak
Layton is building a new multi-specialty health center in the Daybreak Community in the southwestern part of the Salt Lake Valley. The three-story facility will house primary and emergency health care services including outpatient examination rooms, a surgical center with four operating suites, a pharmacy, a 24-hour-a-day emergency room and an AirMed helicopter landing pad to allow for the transfer of patients to the University of Utah Medical Center.
The new specialty care center will be the University of Utah Health Care’s largest off-campus facility. The center has been designed to achieve a LEED® Silver certification and is anticipated to open in the late fall of this year.
Blendtec Expansion
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for an expansion to Blendtec’s current facilities in Orem, Utah in March. Blendtec is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of blending equipment. The 100,000-square-foot expansion will be used primarily for the manufacturing and assembly of Blendtec’s new Self Serve Smoothie Maker in addition to a small medical clinic that will complement the company’s existing fitness and massage center and full-time personal trainer.
Maliheh Free Clinic Expansion
Layton broke ground on an expansion to the Maliheh Free Clinic in Salt Lake City in May. The clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians, doctors and nurses who provide free medical service to 80-100 patients each day who are poor or under-insured. Expansion work will include the addition of three examination rooms, bringing the total number of exam rooms in the clinic to eight, as well as a new waiting area and family restroom. The expansion will also enhance the level of privacy and quality provided at the clinic. Nearly half of the project’s cost has been donated by organizations in the construction industry, mirroring the volunteer effort that goes into running the clinic.
Recently Completed Projects:
J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center
The 107,000-square-foot J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center, the largest and most energy efficient recreation facility in Salt Lake County, opened in March. Located in Herriman, Utah, the new rec center features a competition-sized indoor swimming pool with eight lanes; an indoor leisure pool with slides, a lazy river and water play equipment; an indoor running and walking track; a 16,000-square-foot double gymnasium; six competition racquetball courts; exercise and fitness equipment; a dance and aerobics studio; multi-use rooms; and a drop-in daycare area.
The facility has qualified for a LEED® Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council®, becoming the first LEED Platinum certified recreation center in Utah and joining an elite group as one of just six projects in Utah to achieve a Platinum certification. The building was designed to use 40 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than a non-LEED certified building of similar size.
Montage Deer Valley
Montage Deer Valley, a new luxury five star resort and spa located at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City, opened in December 2010. The massive project totals nearly one million square feet and is situated on 16 acres in the majestic Wasatch Mountains.
